Beyond The Tattoo TV's Scott Messina wants to hear your story

Everyone has a story to tell. Some choose to paint their story with ink on skin. Such are the stories executive producer Scott Messina loves to bring to life with “Beyond The Tattoo,” a passion project that is quickly becoming one of Amazon Prime Video’s most popular new series. Read on to hear how the tale of your tat could land you on its next episode…

It’s a winning formula

Beyond The Tattoo follows the adventures of Scott and crew as they travel from location to location interviewing the artists and human canvasses unique to tattoo culture. Add a dash of compelling stories told from both sides of the needle, a pinch of intricate beautiful, and ultimately attainable body art and you’ve got all the ingredients for a binge-worthy evening of entertainment.

Behind every tattoo, there’s a story.
And we’re here to tell it.

“‘’Beyond’ began in 2017 with the pilot episode,” says Scott. “I was feeling it out, the show was getting better and better, when all of a sudden, just this morning, in fact, I’m talking to some real game changers in the ink industry [Inked Magazine] who love the show. So it’s looking like we’re going to hit 2020 going strong with Season 2.”

What’s Your Story?

As a Walt Disney World DJ himself, as well as the owner/operator of his own full-service entertainment company, Scott is no stranger to the tattoos that have become an essential part of many music artists and DJ’s image. Or to the fascination the stories that inspired those images offer.

“Frankie Orange, from Annapolis, MD, was in and out of Orlando for a while,” says Scott. “He did Justin Timberlake’s cross, he did James Hetfield’s neck tattoo, he did Rob Zombie’s clown. And when I first me him he was like ‘Look at this tattoo, man.’ And it was just a big black blob on his arm. And he was like “It might look like crap to everyone else, but to me it was 1985 and I remember exactly what happened and I would never change or cover up that tattoo because of what it represents.’”

THAT’S what this show is about — those indelible chapters in a
person’s life they choose to celebrate in art.

Scott is currently looking for DJs interested in appearing in an episode of Beyond The Tattoo. Those interested in auditioning can submit photos of their body art to info@beyondthetattoo.com

Beyond The Tattoo Season 1 is now appearing on Amazon and Tubi.tv

Spotlight: Being a “Girl” DJ
The trials and triumphs'

Equally talented and ambitious, female DJs are increasing securing headline spots at clubs and corporate events, and even dominating the festival circuit -- last year saw DJ Nina Kravitz clock almost twice as many festivals as top-performing band The Killers (final score 35 – 18). Female DJs are also snaring their share of high-profile advertising campaigns: DJ Peggy Gou recently banked with both Porsche and Ray Ban; and that’s DJ Alison Wonderland’s track “Here 4 U” you were hearing in Super Bowl 2019 ads.

All of which we consider less of a triumph for gender equality and more a testament to the hard work and passion these women and others are pouring into their craft.

Still, the life of a female DJ is not without its challenges, good and bad, as we recently learned in our conversation with DJ “Chitown Shani” Barnett, a name familiar to those attending her seminars at DJ Times, Mobile Beat Conference and the Last Vegas DJ Show.

PO: So Shani, who better than you to ask, how’s life these days for female DJs?

Shani: Well, for me, I’m a club and mobile DJ, so for instance, the other day I was at a club I don’t usually play, covering for friend, and I’m DJing, headphones on, with a male friend keeping me company sitting there on the subwoofer. And people are coming up to him to ask for songs. Not asking him to ask me. But assuming he was the DJ!

PO: Ouch.

Shani: You got to laugh, right? It happens at mobile gigs, too. People will walk right up to my tech, instead of me, just because he’s a guy. So I still deal with that.

PO: On the other hand, though, do you find being a female DJ sometimes works in your favor?

Shani: Well, I’m going to be honest. Sometime it’s a good thing. I just booked a holiday party at an all-women’s event. They reached out to me with that in mind. I also work at two high-end restaurants that want high-end looking female DJ. So yeah, sometimes that get’s me in the door. But it’s my talent that keeps the door open.

PO: Do you think they’ll ever come a day when people don’t say “girl” DJ?

Shani: There’s always going to be someone who comes up to me and says “Wow, you’re really good for a female DJ.” To which I generally reply, “How do you know I’m a female?” But that kind of thing really doesn’t bother me anymore.

PO: Any advice for up-and-coming female DJs?

Shani: My advice is the same for any newbie. Anyone can be a DJ nowadays. So be prepared to practice, if you have a passion for it. Be prepared to show them you have what it takes. Because getting through the door is one thing. Staying there takes hard work and commitment. To me it doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, but of course for females, while we may stand out a little bit more, we also have to work a whole lot harder to be taken seriously.

Rachel Lynch:
VirtualDJ 2020 Review

VirtualDJ has always struggled to sit at the “cool kids” table despite being the most used DJ software in the world. With 113 million downloads, it leads the industry with the lowest crash ratio among all programs and is continually pushing boundaries with innovation. Most agree the brand is plagued with an “amateur” stigma; however, VirtualDJ 2020 has come out with its gloves off and is commanding the respect it deserves. With its recent makeover, DJs who once scoffed at the program are now giving it a harder look. For the past 20 years, no DJ software has come close to the reliability and bold features of VirtualDJ, and this update is bringing it back to the top where it belongs.

Vocal critics felt previous versions were unsophisticated and dated, typecasting it as “mobile DJ only” software. While this couldn’t be farther from the truth, the refined and flatter interface challenges this stereotype head-on. VirtualDJ 2020 has visually matured, addressing one of its most considerable shortcomings. Gone are the gaudy graphics and skeuomorphic designs. Everything now is sexier and elegant with muted iconic red and blue decks along with four streamlined default skins. Users can easily choose to display what is crucial to their workflow by selecting which interface (Starter, Essentials, Pro, and Performance) works best for them. Additionally, a DJ can customize any interface with an abundance of choices to make their experience personalized. The update is like buying a new pair of shoes that already feel broken in. Long term users will feel right at home while the newbies will learn and love the updated look. The modernized skins offer the same utility you have come to expect from VirtualDJ but in a more professional layout.

The update is like buying a new pair of shoes
that already feel broken in.

This update also takes mixing to a new level with its integration of Beatport LINK and Advanced Harmonic Mixing feature. To start, DJs can refine their sets with the ability to play multiple tracks at the same time in compatible harmony. This means the listener won’t have to hear DJ blends that sound like someone is smashing random keys on a piano. VirtualDJ 2020 allows the user to autocorrect the opposing deck (if mismatched) within one semitone (up or down) without distorting or affecting the fidelity of a track in an obvious way. As a result, DJs can expand their creativity and song sections to choices that otherwise wouldn’t be compatible. Also, VirtualDj has expanded its streaming arsenal with the addition of the flagship service Beatport LINK. With over seven million tracks available and curated playlists, DJs now have an additional music platform to rock events from start to finish. Sketchy Wifi? No worry. Beatport LINK PRO ($39.99/mo) and PRO+ (59.99/mo) provide limited offline “locker” storage for tracks to be accessed should the internet connection fail. This integration is an excellent addition for those needing a variety of music on the fly.

It is no secret that VirtualDJ is known for taking risks on unique features before other programs adopt them. In the most recent update, Event DJs now have even more flexibility and freedom to interact with their guests and inject personalization with ease. The Event Scheduler in a revolutionary timeline management tool that allows the user to manually automate VirtualDJ functions in sequential order by writing mini bits of script (sounds scary, but it is super easy). A DJ can now schedule an array of actions to happen at specified times as needed throughout an event. Here are a few examples of how someone might use this new feature. A DJ can schedule a cocktail hour playlist to start 6:00 PM (in a different location) while they are packing up their ceremony rig. There is no need for the DJ to rush over to cocktail hour to start the music since the Event Scheduler starts the music on time every time. A DJ might choose to delay the start of a song while they walk out onto the dance floor to make an announcement, or a business can use a playlist with intermittent scheduled commercials. On New Year’s Eve, a sequenced countdown can be scheduled with complete accuracy. The only limitations are the DJs imagination.

VirtualDJ 2020 is designed to cater to every type of DJ out there and will continue to push boundaries as the leader in innovation. With its sleek interface and abundance of powerful features, it’s well on its way to winning over the skeptics. The grownup design is intuitive and intelligent. If you haven’t updated yet, make the jump. Their world-class programmers have always focused on the DJ and their individual needs and this 2020 update continues with that tradition in offering features and updates that every DJ should be excited about.

About: Fun, creative, and ambitious, DJ Rachel is making her mark as one of the top mobile DJs in the tri-state area. Her diversity as a DJ allows her to play at events that include MetLife Stadium (for the New York Jets) and serve as opening act for George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic and Gloria Gaynor. Video of the Month: "Faith"
Galantis w Dolly Parton feat. Mr. Probz

via Wikipedia
"Faith" by Swedish duo Galantis and Dolly Parton featuring Dutch singer-songwriter Mr Probz, is a remake/remix of John Hiatt's 1987 song "Have a Little Faith in Me". The song is a single from Galantis' upcoming third studio album Church to be released in early 2020.

During a press conference at the Grand Ole Opry on October 12, 2019, Dolly Parton spoke about the song stating: "I have another song that's going to drop right away, a few days before the CMAs, and it is called "Faith". It's a great old song. I have that one out with a group called Galantis which I'm singing with a guy named Mr. Probz. This world is just so dark and ugly and awful... so I'm going to make it my business to try to do songs that are more uplifting, not all Christian-based songs, but songs about better things. Do better, and have a little more love, a little more light and don't be so dark and dirty."
