Mobile Beat Las Vegas 17

MBLV17
Learn from the pros. Party with the stars.

Say "convention" to most folks and what comes to mind? Taxis, airports, continental breakfasts and pay-per-view movies topped the informal survey we just made up. Clearly, the imaginary people we just pretended to interview have never been to Mobile Beat Las Vegas.

MBLV17, for the edification of our imaginary friends, is less a convention and more of a four-day event that offers seminars from top-flight DJs, MCs and industry top-guns, equipment advice, celebrity appearances, tips and tricks, live demos, special discounts from on-site vendors (including yours truly) and much more.

Why go?

Make a run for MBLV and you'll bring home the business savvy and hi-tech tools you need to build a better you.

What to expect...

Seminars: You'll find a variety of industry experts sharing a wealth of information designed to give you and your bookings a serious boost, as well as afternoon seminars hosted by on-site vendors that provide you with hands-on demos of the newest must-have tech.

Exhibits: "MBLV offers mobile DJs the largest exhibit floor in North America," says Mobile Beat's Ryan Burger, "as well as access to convention-only pricing on gear, music and video from a variety of vendors. Promo Only will be there with their usual convention specials and surprises, as well as Denon, Chauvet, and a host of other premium vendors. For a full list of participants you can visit our website."

Nightlife: It's MBLV. Expect to party with the likes of Rob Base (It Takes Two), Cupid (Cupid Shuffle) and rock demigod Lou Gramm of Foreigner (Feels Like The First Time, Hot Blooded, Double Vision, Midnight Blue); all of the above will be appearing on stage and at meet-and-greets throughout the show.

And when the fun is done...

"MBLV is a total jumpstart," concludes Burger. "It's a pleasure for us to see so many attendees so excited about putting what they've learned to work when they get home, and to hear about the great results they've had next year."

Online registration for Mobile Beat Las Vegas 2013 is open. For more info or to lock in some serious pre-event discount tickets visit www.mobilebeat.com

For more of our famous show specials, cruise by the Promo Only booth and cool your dogs while you check 'em from the comfort of our POOL demo stations. First come, first to grab a chair.

Pioneer DDJ-SX

The Pioneer DDJ-SX Performance DJ Controller is now in a relationship with Serato DJ

It's official: The brainiacs behind industry leaders Serato and Pioneer DJ have launched one of the biggest product releases of the year. The Pioneer DDJ-SX sets sail as the first controller to support Serato's shiny new Serato DJ software, giving it a fresh look and futuristic feel that quickly found favor with our review team, who, even now, are putting the SX through its paces while strains of Also Sprach Zarathrustra leak from beneath closed studio doors.

Of course, the fun doesn't stop with software…

  • Dual-deck design allows two tracks to be controlled at the same time, allowing for the simultaneous scratching or setting and recalling hot cues on both tracks.
  • Eight performance pads below the jog wheels for make for ergo-easy hot cueing, roll, slicing and samples.
  • An independent four-channel mixer with support for external sources (including turntables), with a master volume level meter for instantaneous sound level adjustment and independent output controls and readouts.
  • Breakout features include the ability to create your own clean edits on the fly with the tap of the Censor button and dedicated booth-out control.

Alert! The first 10,000 units will ship with the Serato DJ video plug-in (a $100 value) included, free of charge, so snooze and lose.

The Verdict: The DDJ-SX is priced right ($1199.00 list; $999.00 street), has every possible feature you could ask for, and will crush whatever has been holding your mixing back.

Facebook Interest Lists

Suffering from Facebook OVERLOAD?We've got the solution.

Sandwiched between your ex-girlfriend's birthday, the birth announcement of a distant cousin's grandson and the viral video of the cute wittle kittie that seems to pop every other post lies the stuff you're really interested in -- stuff that can easily get lost in your News Feed clutter. Thankfully, Facebook now offers a feature that lets you eliminate the clutter without unfriending Grandma.

Interest Lists offer a place to park the people, places and things that interest you most. For example, you can now create a top Indie Bands list that features all your favorite band's pages and updates or a favorite Music Service list that keeps you up to speed on the latest tunes, tech and Promo Only Facebook-only specials.

Create a list and you see only the best posts from that list in your main news feed. Your list will also appear in the Interests section of your bookmarks. Simply click the list's name to see all the recent posts and activity from the pages and people you most want to hear from, without overloading your main newsfeed, or your brain.

"There are a few variations of sales compensation plans that can work well," say's DJ Success Coach Stacy Zemon. "The plan must be simple enough to both understand and administer, and not under- or overcompensate a sales person." READ MORE

You - Be All That You Can!

This Month the Spotlight is on
YOU!

There is a certain amount of 'can do' in every success story: Edison, Ford, the Wright Brothers, Lance Armstrong, Madame Curie – where would light bulbs, autos, airplanes, doping, and glow in the dark watches be without some serious can-do attitude…

What can you do to open a can of can do?

  1. Know what success is. In order to create success, you must first define it – and far too many people don't. Be clear about what you want and don't want for you and your career. Clarity produces excitement. Excitement produces momentum. Momentum produces change. Change produces results. Results breed success.

  2. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Most people live a life of ho-hum simply because they are (1) controlled by fear (2) always looking for a magic pill or shortcut and (3) not prepared to do the tough stuff. Do the tough stuff: if computers aren't your thing, take a course; if you think marketing means going to the grocery store, buy a book; if uplighting, digital DJing and video mapping sound like so much mumbo-jumbo, hit the forums at Chauvet Lighting, Serato and Denon, and learn how state-of-the-art performance can help you become a state-of-the-art DJ earning a high-end salary.

  3. Be an innovator, not an imitator. Don't let fear stand in the way of your potential to create and innovate. When we created the industry's first CD-based promotional music service, most people told us it wouldn't work. Glad we didn't listen.

  4. Challenge yourself. Imagine what you could achieve if you took all the knowledge, intelligence, time, skill and talent you have and totally milked it. Successful people typically don't have more innate potential, luck, time or opportunity than the next person; but they do consistently find a way to use more of what they've got to get the job done; and so can you.

  5. Be like water: powerful, gentle, adaptable, ever-changing. Being static in a dynamic world is a recipe for disaster. If you can't adapt, you can't succeed. The world we all live in is in a constant state of transition, while most of us are in a constant state of suspension. Statues don't succeed, they just get crapped on.

Watch out for the pigeons.
