We're pleased to announce that for the sixth consecutive year Promo Only is the recipient of the Annual International Dance Music Association's (IDMA) coveted Best Record Pool/Promo Service award. "To be recognized by our peers is, to say the least, extremely gratifying," said Promo Only executive producer Chuck Barrett. "But our deepest thanks go out to the DJs and VJs who cast their ballot for Promo Only each time they reach for our CDs, DVDs and downloads. We're extremely honored by the support our subscribers have shown us through the years."

Denon DJ DN-MC6000

Revisiting the Denon DN MC6000 DJ Controller
Now with MixVibes CROSS DJ!

Last year, we took a first look the fully integrated 4-channel / 8-source Denon DJ DN-MC6000 tabletop DJ controller (our full review can be viewed here). At the time, the MC6000 came factory-equipped with Traktor Pro 2. Later versions featured Virtual DJ. Now, Denon DJ is combining its mega-popular DN-MC6000 with MixVibes CROSS DJ Software – a ground-breaking combo that bears a new look.

Why Cross DJ? Like us, like, you, Denon thinks mixing should be intuitive, fun and easy. The DN-MC6000 has proven it's all that. The MC6000 with Cross DJ under the hood is all that and more.

With CROSS DJ, it's falling-off-a-log easy to find and prepare your media.

  • User definable smart lists with dynamic update whenever you add matching songs
  • "Prepare" pane to organize and prepare your set
  • Flag your tracks with color labels and find them back within seconds
  • iTunes integration
  • Album browser for visual search
  • History node to keep record of all your played tracks/sessions
  • Advanced 'info' tool to edit any tag field
  • Automatic track quality indicator

CROSS DJ also includes a LOT of advanced features designed to give
free rein to your creativity.

  • Smart audio effects
  • Locators & CUE points
  • Ultra precise BPM analyzer
  • Automatic and Manual loops, locators, auto beat matching
  • Multiple routing modes to accommodate various audio set-ups
  • Effect synchronization on music beat/tempo
  • High-end master tempo & hybrid pitch allowing speed change while keeping the original tonal Key (note)

Our take: While many DJ programs provide a variety of tools aimed at audio performance, few pay attention to the integrity and quality of the audio files at hand as Cross; and fewer still take additional steps to improve, restore and convert your existing audio files to favorable compressions. If you love audio like we do, you'll love the sound of Cross DJ.

Grouplove

Grouplove
Happy beats are here again.

We hate to be the bearer of good news, but optimism is back on the menu. And nobody's serving the sunny side up these days like Los Angeles indie art-rockers Grouplove.

GL's puppy-like enthusiasm and deft knack for melodies first compelled us to crank carefree to 11 back in 2009 with the debut of their eponymous EP, appearances on Last Call with Carson Daly and buzz-worthy stint as opening act for Florence and the Machine.

Now riding the wave of their 2011 debut album, Never Trust A Happy Song, band members Christian Zucconi (vocals, guitar), Hannah Hooper (vocals, keyboards), Andrew Wessen (vocals, guitar), Sean Gadd (bass, vocals) and Ryan Rabin (drums) are taking their self-produced pet project (Rabin is the son of legendary Yes guitarist/film composer Trevor Rabin) to the mainstream.

Their sound? Imagine The Pixies meet Weezer by way of Blur, Flaming Lips and Arcade Fire and you'll be close. Or better yet, check out their newest incessant earwig "Tongue Tied."

Warp Records

Warp Records
Respect.

Mysterious and often otherworldly, Warp Records' legacy of electronic dance occupies a singular place in the history of House, a chapter that began, modestly enough, in 1989 in a small record store in Sheffield England owned by self-confessed indie kids Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell.

The first Warp releases, housed in deep purple generic sleeves, were A&R'd as the duo would rush downstairs from studio to store whenever they heard a track that caught their ear. Nightmares on Wax was signed when DJ George Evelyn entered the shop hoping to sell his break-dance inspired white labels. As Beckett recalls, "He played 'that track' [Dextrous] that everyone was mad about," and was signed on the spot. Likewise, an evening at a local club led to the signing of LFO, whose eponymous Warp debut sold 130, 000 copies and broke the Brit Top 20. Not bad, Beckett remembers, considering indie distribution at the time consisted of "spliffheads wandering around warehouses." Together with label mates Tricky Disco and Sweet Exorcist Warp's first wave ushered in a new era of house replete with signature bleeps and beats.

Today the label is based in London and continues to release groundbreaking acts: Aphex Twins, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Prefuse 73 and Maximo Park being the best known names among them; but you'll certainly want to check out Warp's entire roster of electronic mavericks at http://warp.net/, as well as the myriad of classic Warp tracks available by way of their YouTube channel.

M4A

M4A
audio dynamite comes in small packages

M4A. It's a new(ish) file format to DJs. You've got questions. Here's all you need to know: M4A stands for MPEG 4 Audio, an increasingly popular file format used to represent audio files, both lossy & lossless. You're no doubt familiar with MP3 and how it shrinks down the file size of songs. M4A does the same thing, only better.

Unlike MP3, which has typically fixed bitrates that directly correlate to audio quality, M4A utilizes variable bitrate encoding, allocating space as needed to deliver high-quality audio nearly identical to the uncompressed WAV files found on CD.

M4A also features the following benefits...

  • An average of 40% smaller file size than WAV (for example, a 40MB WAV file can be reduced to a 25MB M4A file – with no loss of quality)
  • Track info that includes artist, title, BPM and more (unlike WAV files)
  • Mac and PC compatible
  • Supported by Serato, Virtual DJ, PCDJ, MixMeister Fusion, MixVibes and more

Best of all, M4A gives you what every serious pro needs: The ability to deliver CD quality audio directly from your laptop without a hard drive the size of a Prius.

Where can you find M4A?

POOL Audio delivers the newest pop, rhythmic top 40, hip-hop, rock, country, Latin and electronic dance releases to you via M4A, daily, served up via direct digital download. POOL subscribers also receive our exclusive new Intro Edits & Quick Edits, featuring extended intros and outros attached to the hottest new releases, as well as the convenience of monthly billing.

Tip of the Month

There's Backup – and there's BACKUP.
The DIGITAL Advantage

Q: I'd love to make the move to downloads, but with CDs I have backup, too. What happens if my hard drive crashes?

A: Accidents happen. It's what happens next that counts. We took two phone calls recently from two subscribers who'd had their libraries stolen. One was a CD subscriber; the other was one of our digital subscribers. We had to disappoint our CD subscriber. A lot of his stuff was no longer available; promotional CD pressing are only available for a limited time. He's going to have to buy it again. Our digital subscriber had her portable hard drive boosted as she left her gig; she turned around and it was gone. Since she had POOL, she logged in and downloaded her entire library to her new hard drive, same day, free of charge, in plenty of time for her gig that night.

That's back up. And that's the digital advantage.
