The Pioneer CDJ 350 & DJM 350 Low end can kiss Pioneer's hind end This month we're taking a look at the affordable new CDJ-350 and DJM-350, a total package designed to offer budding DJs a shot at some advanced features like USB integration, effects and MIDI at budding DJ prices. For the record, each unit is priced and available individually... The CDJ 350 Media PlayerAs DJ setups go, this is compact, intuitive, flexible design at its best. It's also Pioneer's most affordable CDJ option for use with their RekordBox music management software. But here's where the CDJ 350's bang-for-your-buck gets really sweet... *A USB key input is selectable from the surface of the CDJ and at the rear USB MIDI is provided for connecting to digital DJ software such as Traktor. *Hold BPM Lock down and you can select a master tempo for your mix and every track that is loaded (from any media) will be auto-pitched to that tempo. *Beat Indicator on-screen gives you a basic view of a bar moving through each beat, making beat match-mixing way easier than it should be for a newbie and things like scratching on a beat a breeze, too. The DJM 350 MixerIs there a compact 2-channel mixer at this price point that packs these features? Uh, no. The DJM 350 packs in perks like fader-start control, crossfader curve adjustment and sports solid feeling faders and rotaries without padding the price. Also bullet-list worthy... *A master effects section where a single knob level/depth rotary controls all the DJM-350's effects. Four large on/off buttons switch between Gate, Jet (flanger/ phaser), Crush and Filter. *An EQ section that features isolator 3-band EQ, allowing you to completely kill the low, mid or high frequencies when turned fully counter-clockwise. *And the Killer Feature Award goes to... Record your mixes direct from the DJM 350 by sticking a USB stick in and hitting record. Once the recording is stopped, stick the USB in your computer and a folder called 'Pioneer DJ' will have been created. Look inside and you'll find a perfect WAV recording of your mix. Very slick. The VerdictIndividually great, the sum of these parts make for a sleek and sophisticated DJ setup that is future-proofed with USB and the RekordBox software. The CDJ-350 is priced around $699.00. The DJM 350 around $599.00. Bundled prices are available from some dealers, so it pays to shop around.

Artists to Watch… Kaci Battaglia |
|
We're not in the crystal ball business, but if we had to single out a single dance artist as most likely to break out in 2010, one name makes our short list: Kaci Battaglia. A brief history of how we came to find Kaci performing next week at the Promo Only Showcase in Atlantic City... Having wowed Curb Record president Mike Curb at the tender age of 12, Kaci soon found herself with a top ten worldwide hit (Paradiso), touring with the likes of Backstreet Boys, Bow Wow, Jessica Simpson, O-Town, and Atomic Kitten, and performing before sell-out crowds who knew all the words to all of her songs, all before she turned 13. More recently, her 2007 dance hit, I Can't Help Myself, signaled the return of the still teenage Kaci to the spotlight, following some time off “just to be kid.” 2009 brought Kaci back to radio with the hit single Crazy Possessive. “I co-wrote the single with producer Michael Grant,” she explains. “It's probably best described as electro-pop with an edge -- definitely aggressive, which fits the song, but a lot of fun. It is a strong topic with a positive message, and hopefully a lot of girls are able to relate to it.” Kaci and her body will shoot front and center stage August 17th at the Pioneer/Promo Only Showcase at the House of Blues Atlantic City. In the meantime, for those of |

Propellerheads' ReBirth-338 Buy this app. Now. Simply put, ReBirth-338 is a faithful digital recreation of the most popular synths and drum machines in music history -- the Roland TB-303, the TR-808, and the TR-909, without whom none of what we call House would be possible. In this inspired digital recreation, not only do they nail the originals, but there are two 303's, an 808 and a 909, preset saving abilities, pattern programming, and a song mode to connect the patterns together.
There are also global effects: distortion, compression, an envelope filter, and delay. What's not to love? The bottom line: If you're an electronic musician, producer, DJ, MC, whatever, get this app NOW! Not only is this thing a piece of music history, but it's a great piece of software. There's a reason the originals made such an imprint on the house scene, and it's all here, and then some. $6.99 at itunes.apple.com |
