Native Instruments' Kontrol X1
Half Art. Half Science.
Once an art form, modern DJing is now half art, half science, thanks to the breed of bottomless hard drives, state-of-the-art software, and dedicated external controllers to control that software. Digital DJing is exciting, it's cool, and even if you don't know the difference between a crossfader and a high-pass filter, it's fun to see how this stuff works.

Artists to Watch: Tyler Herrin New Country's New Face |
|
He doesn't wear a cowboy hat. And while he hails from Atlanta, Georgia, you'd hardly notice the Southern accent, although his unfailing good manners and laid-back charm are a dead giveaway that somebody's mama done raised them right. What is immediately apparent upon hearing 25-year old singer/songwriter Tyler Herrin is that he represents a new generation of Country artists who have grown up in a world where music has no borders… "My dad grew up playing music and he made sure I had a ukulele in my hands as soon as I was able to hold it," says Herrin. "Patsy Cline, the Kingston Trio, Chubby Checker, and my dad banging out country classics was the soundtrack I grew up with. Later, when I graduated to guitar -- they were under every bed in my house -- like every teenager, I migrated to music my parents couldn't understand." Herrin refers to his brief stint in a punk-rock band, and to what can only be called an obsession with Canadian alternative rockers Barenaked Ladies. "Rock Spectacle changed my life: I was blown away by BNL's ability to mix so many styles and genres so successfully and by how much fun they clearly were having doing it. But those Country hooks and melodies have always stayed with me." Hooks, melodies and fun are what make Herrin's musical world go ‘round, as can be seen in the lead single from his new album, A Simple Necessary… It's Not Now is an infectiously upbeat song that tells the story of two people who can't seem to fall in love with each other at the same time, and was, as Herrin confirms, inspired by real life. "I dated a girl in college who I really liked and she really liked me - but for some reason, we could never make it work," Herrin confesses. "Timing, schedules, personalities, etc. It was more work than fun, but we were really attracted to each other." Warning: It's Not Now sports a chorus you'll be hard pressed to forget, so listen to the FREE download available by clicking here at your own risk. Tyler Herrin: A Simple Necessary.
