IDMA music awards

Your vote. Your music. Your future.

Last year, with your help, Promo Only took the prestigious International Dance Music Awards' (IDMA) Best Record Pool honor for the third consecutive year. With that award came greater access for us -- and you -- to more music, access that last year translated into our ability to offer you weekly delivery and the convenience of drag & drop audio and video files.

This year, we're pleased to announce that we've been nominated once again. We're hoping to make it four for four and maintain our reputation with the record labels as the industry's premier promotional service, and to further our ability to offer you even greater service.  But we need your help.

"We're coming into this red hot this year," says Pete Werner, our co-founder and executive program director. "Thanks to our head of promotions, Cary Vance and all the hard-working people at Promo Only Promotions, we proud to say that we've been responsible for every #1 Dance record of 2009."

"And beyond," adds Vance. "Ninety consecutive weeks of #1s says a lot about what Promo Only can do for the artists and labels we represent, and for the subscribers we serve."

"What we don't want to happen is for our subscribers and friends to assume that we're a shoe-in," continues Vance. "We need your vote if we're to continue to break new ground and offer new services."

The categories are…

Category 35 Best Independent Record Promotion/Marketing:  Cary Vance & John Suraci – Promo Only Promotions

Category 38Best Record Pool - Promo Only

Numark NS7 New!
Numark NS7 Turntable Controller

For nearly a year Numark’s ad campaign for their newest turntable controller has boasted "There’s NS7… and then there’s everything else." And they may be right. Designed by Numark in collaboration with Serato, the NS7 combines an all-metal chassis with adjustable torque, motorized, aluminum turntable platters, vinyl, and a state-of-the-art audio interface to deliver a total performance solution bound to satisfy even the hardcore.

What’s not to love? Not much. Standout features include…

  • A full complement of premium faders, knobs, buttons that feel as good as they look
  • NEW! Strip Search (patent pending) virtual-needle-drop control that integrates seamlessly with Serato Itch® (software included)
  • The ability to send data to your software more than 10x faster than standard MIDI resolution
  • Mac and PC compatible
  • Completely compatible with Serato Scratch LIVE crates, loops, and cue points
  • It has a feature called "Strip Search". Yeah…we mentioned it before but couldn’t resist mentioning it again.
Other highlights include:
  • Turntable controls that feature modern and classic settings and allow you to model the feel you prefer
  • Seven-inch, vinyl records with 45RPM adapters that sit on real slipmats
  • A high-precision, replaceable CP-PRO crossfader that offers custom contour adjust and reverse adjustment
  • Replaceable D-Type digital-VCA line faders
  • 100mm, smooth, stiff pitch sliders and plus & minus buttons for bending; and a zero-point LED, so it’s easy to know when you’re in the middle.
  • Did we mention a feature actually called "Strip Search"? FYI: Just because are legal adults doesn’t make us mature.

Speaking of Strip Search, here’s the deal: In an inspired flash of forward-thinking retro-cool, Numark has developed a touch strip that acts as a virtual needle-drop, allowing you to find your cue points instantly using the on-screen waveform and the digit of your choice. It’s way cooler than it sounds, as you’ll see if you’ll check out the bazillion or so online demos available at http://www.numark.com/ns7sightings.

The final word: The NS7 is next-generation nirvana. Priced at or around $1299.00.

Dj Gill

DJs to Watch:
Jeremy "Dirty" Gill [Second in a Series...]

Want to know how to make a serious name for yourself as a DJ? Ask up-and-coming South Florida DJ/producer Jeremy Gill and he’ll tell you networking is key…

"It’s about getting and keeping your name out there," says Gill. "Talking with record labels, clubs, other DJs, finding promoters, handing out CDs and any promotional material you have – just staying in contact and sending new material, consistently. You want to be on their mind when the next opportunity comes up."

Gill must be doing something right. In a relatively short span of time, he has gone from playing local venues to producing his own tracks alongside Miami Bass and hip-hop act Afro-Rican (Derrek Rahming) as one half of Hipnotek to making quite a name for himself as a go-to remixer.

Says Gill of his marketing approach: "I focus on people who are producing the same music I am – I’m not just throwing it out there to anyone who’ll listen; I’m really trying to target one audience and push that."

Gill’s current projects, a gripping tech-house remix for electro alternative group Decoding Jesus and a work-in-progress with DJ Evan Gamble Lewis, speak volumes of his talent, determination and drive.

"You’re only as good as your last project."

Put the Needle on the Record001
DJing on the fly? Software makers Delaware have an app for that.

In a possible blow to dual-deck iPod DJ device manufacturers, Japanese design and software group, Delaware, have come out swinging with a new DJ application designed for the iPod Touch and iPhone crowd.

Our informal bench test found Record001 to be a decent (and highly addictive) little app that incorporates many traditional vinyl elements into a simple touch-screen application. It allows you to cue and play; choose track placement with a stylus graphic interface; backspin or reverse track progression; you can even incorporate scratches and a handful of other effects into any of the songs you have stored in your iTunes library.

Not bad.

In fact, at just $1.99 Record001 is a whole lot better than not bad…

Record001 is available for purchase by clicking here
